A 14-year-old girl’s alleged plan to kidnap the three-year-old daughter of the couple who had employed her was foiled after she was caught stealing a cellphone.
Priyam and Reshmi Sengupta, residents of Hindustan Park in Sonarpur, had recently employed the teenager, who hails from a North 24-Parganas village, to accompany their daughter Priyanjali to school. The girl was arrested on Sunday.
On Thursday, she stole the cellphone of the mother of one of Priyanjali’s classmates. She was caught within minutes as the phone rang from inside her bag while the owner stood next to her.
“The woman called Priyanjali’s parents and told them what had happened. The couple did not take the matter lightly and questioned the girl for the next two days,” the officer added.
“On Saturday, she confessed that she and a male accomplice had planned to kidnap Priyanjali,” added the officer.
Priyam, an employee of the Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, lodged a complaint with Gariahat police station on Sunday. Police are looking for the teenager’s accomplice.
According to investigators, the girl had befriended drivers and cleaners of Priyanjali’s pool car. “She had an affair with a cleaner. The man promised to marry her and told her that the money they needed to elope would come from the ransom they would get if they managed to kidnap Priyanjali,” said an officer.
The man also asked the girl to steal a cellphone so that they could communicate. The kidnap had been planned on Monday, added the officer.
