Gangtok, Dec. 20: A 13-year-old student from Gangtok raised Rs 14,000 to support the construction of a rehabilitation centre by selling self-made greeting cards.

Priya Mishra, a Class VII student of Neil Tara Academy, handed over the money to Dr Sabitri Hamal, the working president of the Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samity - a Gangtok-based NGO working for the rehabilitation of physically challenged people.

"We are moved by the gesture shown by this little girl. She is an inspiration. We accept her contribution with utmost humility," said Hamal.

The centre would be coming up at Bermoik village in South Sikkim, around 45km from here.

Priya had made 750 greeting cards and sold around 700 for Rs 20 each.

Her work includes paintings of tourist spots such as Enchey monastery, Tashi view point, White Hall, Raj Bhavan and Chhangu Lake.

Asked from where she had drawn her inspiration, Priya said she got inspiration from things around her.

"One day, I went for a morning walk with my father and saw an elderly woman without a hand. At that time, I thought why I couldn't use my painting skill to help people who are physically disabled," she told journalists.

Priya shared her idea with the school administrative head, Navraj Tiwari, who supported her and contacted the Sikkim Viklang Sahayta Samity . "Our institution is proud to have a student like her. She has made us proud," Tiwari said.

Upendra Kumar Mishra, Priya's father, said: "Priya started painting at the age of three. She is average in studies but very good in painting."
