Salt Lake: Former Calcutta High Court judge Amit Talukdar was appointed the interim vice-chancellor of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) on Saturday.

The university's executive council has accepted vice-chancellor P. Ishwara Bhat's resignation, Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, the acting registrar, said after the council met on Saturday.

Bhat will hand over the charges to Talukdar on Monday, Khan said.

Bhat had on March 28 submitted his resignation to Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, citing "health and family reasons" on March 28. The CJI is the university's chancellor.

On the same day, students had boycotted classes, demanding Bhat's removal.

Classes were suspended at NUJS on that day because of the student agitation, a first in its 18 years of existence.

Bhat had announced his resignation the same day after meeting representatives of the Students' Juridical Association and NUJS officials at his home. "I decided to step down not because of the incidents taking place on the campus... I can't continue because of some personal reasons," he had told Metro after sending his resignation to the CJI.

The trigger behind the demand for Bhat's resignation was an apparent delay in making public the report of a statutory review commission. The CJI had sent the report to Bhat in November.

The report had spoken of certain failures of the university administration during Bhat's regime and the review commission suggested several remedial steps.

Bhat, 62, had joined NUJS as its VC in November 2011. His term was extended for five years in September 2016.

Bhat, who has a PhD in law, was the former dean and acting VC of the University of Mysore.
