Fatal fall from highrise

A 32-year-old youth died after falling off an apartment on the 31st floor at South City early on Sunday. Police said Kaushik Dutta, the deceased, had come to the city from Indonesia to spend New Year’s Eve with his friend, who lives at the Prince Anwar Shah Road housing estate.

Dutta was taken to a private hospital, where he was declared dead. “The youth apparently fell accidentally. We are talking to Dutta’s friend,” an officer said.

Body found: The body of a youth in his 20s was found beside Kalyani Expressway, near Khardah, on Sunday morning. Police suspect he was stabbed several times before being strangled.

Varsity security: Employees and students of Calcutta University’s College Street campus will have to produce their identity proof while entering the premises. Others will have to sign their names in the register to be kept at the main gate. The rule will come into effect from Monday.

Blasts: Swapan Halder, 32, was injured when two bombs went off in a garbage dump near his Kestopur house on Sunday morning. An officer of Baguiati police station said Halder, a grocer, was removing garbage with a spade when the blast occurred.

Duo held: Koushik Das, 26, and Sunil Dutta, 24, residents of Domjur in Howrah, were arrested on Sunday after the father of Saikat Das, 18, who had died during New Year celebrations with the duo on Saturday night, lodged a police complaint alleging they had killed his son. Police said the three youths had drank at a local bar and were dancing in a club when Saikat collapsed.

Accident: Zakir Mollah, 30, whose motorcycle was hit by a trailer at Belepole on the Kona Expressway on Sunday afternoon, was declared dead at Howrah District Hospital. A person who was riding pillion suffered serious injuries. He was admitted to the hospital. The driver of the trailer fled with the vehicle.
