Siliguri, July 16: Less than a month after former Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Dilip Sinha and a teacher, Mukti Deb, were arrested in connection with using fake marksheets, North Bengal University (NBU) laid its hands on another bogus certificate.
The fraud came to light yesterday when NBU authorities received a letter from a Mumbai-based placement consultancy firm, Quest Screening Services Pvt Ltd, which sought authentication of Subrata Basu’s marksheet, which said he had passed MBA from NBU in 1995.
“We declared the marksheet fake, because we introduced MBA only two years ago,” said T.K. Chatterjee, the registrar of the university.
NBU authorities today lodged a complaint with Matigara police, copies of which have been sent to the additional superintendent and the district superintendent of police.
“We have asked the firm to lodge an FIR with the Mumbai police because the person concerned has submitted the certificate there,” Chatterjee said.
This is not, however, the first incident. “In August 2002, we were contacted by the US consulate, Mumbai, which sought authentication of Shital Khadka’s certificates. She had probably applied for a visa. She was not a student of the university and the admit card and marksheet were fake. FIRs were lodged here and in Mumbai, but that was all,” Chatterjee said.
