Sankara Nethralaya on Friday promised a Lasik centre on AJC Bose Road in a week and an eye hospital-cum-research facility at Rajarhat within two years.

Lasik is a laser surgery that alters the curvature of the cornea and reduces the dependence on spectacles and contact lenses. S.S. Badrinath, the chairman emeritus of the hospital, said their second hospital in the city would have dedicated departments for complex eye ailments.

The hospital got a four-acre plot from the state government at a subsidised rate in December for the second hospital.

“In the first phase, we will construct a 15,000sq ft hospital, exactly the size of our first hospital in the city in Mukundapur. The research centre will come up in the next phase,” said Badrinath.

He was speaking at a programme to rechristen the Mukundapur hospital Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya following a tie-up with the Aditya Birla Group.

“The tie-up will bring in funds and allow us do more charitable work. Of the 72 beds at the Mukundapur facility, 37 are free beds,” Badrinath said.
