Engineer on circuit bench recce

Jalpaiguri, Sept. 21: The chief engineer of the state government is expected to visit Jalpaiguri Dak Bungalow to inspect the building that was chosen by the high court to temporarily house the circuit bench.

Following the ruling of the full bench of Calcutta High Court, engineers of the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad had sent it a detailed design of the building through the district judge.

S.K. Chakrobarty, district and sessions judge of Jalpaiguri, said: “The plan and the detail structural design were sent to the high court as per requirement. We have been intimated that the chief engineer of the state government is likely to visit the site.”

Zilla parishad members, however, find little to cheer.

The district administration or the state law ministry, which chose the bungalow on Station Road as the site is the property of the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad. The zilla parishad is yet to receive any letter of intimation from the district administration or the state law ministry stating their interest in taking the bungalow on lease for the circuit bench.

“We have heard from the officials and have also read newspaper reports that the venue has been chosen. But we are yet to receive any intimation,” said a senior official attached with the zilla parishad.

Leaders of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench O Sarbik Unnayan Dabi Aday Samannoy Committee, are still apprehensive about the attitude of the government. “The judges of the high court have done their best in this regard. But the attitude of the government leaves a lot to be desired. In order to bring the Bill in the winter session of the Parliament, the government should act promptly,” convener of the committee Kamal Krishna Banerjee said.

The site for setting up the circuit house was was finalised. after the chief justice of Calcutta High court and a three-judges committee visited Jalpaiguri early this year,

Following the visit, processing was on with the chief architect of the state and the officials of the PWD department, who visited Jalpaiguri. The government has sanctioned a sum for the renovation of the building as well.

Jalpaiguri district magistrate A. Subbaiya said: “We have come to know that the state government has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for renovating the building. We are taking the matter very seriously and are ready to provide any information sought by the high court or the government in this case.”
