CID officers on Tuesday arrested a hardware engineer for sending abusive mails to a doctor of a nursing home in Alipore.

Subhankar Das, 28, was picked up from his office at Infinity Building Tower II in Salt Lake’s Sector V.

“For the past year, the victim’s inbox had been flooded with abusive mails from various senders,” said a CID officer. “Finally, we found that all the email IDs had been created using a single internet connection that was in the name of Subhankar Das.”

It was almost a year ago that the victim — a 30-year-old married doctor who lives in Nimta, on the northern fringes of Calcutta — met Subhankar through a common friend. She started receiving the abusive mails a couple of days after meeting him.

Her father, an NRI doctor, lodged a complaint with Nimta police. The case was handed over to the CID much latter. The department’s cyber cell started investigating the case.

“We found that all the mails, irrespective of their different IDs, had been sent using the same internet connection,” the officer said, adding it was apparent that all the IDs were “fictitious, created by one person”.

The cops traced Subhankar with some help from the internet service provider. He works for a computer hardware company. He lives in Jadavpur with his parents.

He was produced in a Barrackpore court on Wednesday, which remanded him in judicial custody till April 6.

In a similar case last week, IT professional Aryaman Roy was arrested for writing obscene messages on the Facebook profile of a former colleague.
