A junior doctor attached to a state-run hospital shot himself dead on Monday afternoon at the family’s fourth-floor apartment at Rail Vihar, near Ruby hospital, off the Bypass.

Around the same time, a postgraduate medical student jumped to her death from the terrace of her four-storeyed hostel.

Police said Aveek Dutta, 25, an intern at the Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital, was alone in the flat when he shot himself.

“The bullet entered through his right temple and pierced his head. He died on the spot. The doctor left behind a suicide note in the room, which says no one was responsible for his death. There hasn’t been any complaint of foul play. We are treating it as a case of suicide,” said an investigating officer.

On the table in the room were four chits — one open and three folded. “The open chit had ‘Kanpatti’ (the area around ear) scribbled on it. Matha (head), Heart and Mukh (mouth) were written on the other three. It seems he had performed a draw of lots to decide where to shoot himself,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, the joint commissioner of police (crime).

The cops found the revolver with which Aveek shot himself and three bullets in the room. “We are trying to find out how the victim got hold of the gun and four bullets,” said Ghosh.

No one in the vicinity apparently heard any gunshot. “The doctor had turned up the TV volume to the maximum to drown out the sound of the firing,” an officer said.

According to police, Aveek killed himself between 1pm and 3.30pm, when his father Prabhat, who has retired as chief mechanical engineer of Eastern Railway, had gone out for some work.

“Aveek’s mother was in Lucknow with his sister. When Prabhat returned, he heard the TV in full blast but there was no response from Aveek even after he repeatedly pressed the doorbell. A worried Prabhat called neighbours, who alerted the police,” said an officer.

The cops broke open the door and found Aveek lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

A neighbour who did not want to be named said Aveek was a “sports enthusiast” and always “jovial”. “He was planning to do higher studies in medicine. How could a youth so ambitious and full of life kill himself?” the neighbour wondered.

Some of Aveek’s friends recalled how he actively took part in a recent get-together on the occasion of Id.

In the other suicide, 25-year-old Supriya Ghosh jumped from the terrace of Swarnamoyee Girls’ Hostel, on the campus of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, around 3.30pm. “The resident of Uluberia in Howrah suffered multiple fractures and extensive bleeding and died in the critical care unit of the hospital around 7.30pm,” said an officer.

Supriya was doing her MD in dermatology at Calcutta Medical College. She apparently carried a stool to the terrace, took off her shoes and then jumped.

Himangshu Jana, who works in the dining hall of the girls’ hostel, was alerted by the girl’s screams around 3.30pm. “I rushed to the courtyard and found her lying on her abdomen in a pool of blood. She was trembling. We took her to the emergency unit,” Jana recalled.
