Siliguri, April 14: Residents in the northern part of the town are queuing up at the Pradhannagar police station to collect and submit tenant verification forms after a cache of improvised explosives and timer devices was found at a rented house at Gurung Bustee on Saturday.

“Around 200 forms were collected from our police station in the past 48 hours,” said an official of the Pradhannagar police station today.

Quite a few of them have been submitted as well, the officer added.

Susanta Dutta, a bank employee, has already furnished details about his tenant, prompted by “the series of incidents involving blasts and recovery of explosives in the town”.

“This is a good step initiated by the authorities following the recent developments and all house owners should co-operate with them and fill up the forms,” Dutta added.

The forms were printed after twin blasts killed three alleged bomb-makers at their rented place in Champasari’s Nayabasti on April 3. The blast trail has already led the police to two rented houses at Mallaguri and Gurung Bustee where they found explosives.

Landlords are required to fill in a lot of details about their tenants — including names, pictures, addresses, voter ID card numbers, purpose of stay in Siliguri and particulars about family members — in the form. It will also contain the particulars of the landlord.

Five civic wards (1-3 and 45, 46) are within the jurisdiction of Pradhannagar police station.

The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) hopes to make it compulsory for landowners across the town to collect and submit the tenant verification form at all three police stations within the civic area.

“I have already instructed all councillors and ward committee members to collect details about tenants living in their respective localities and to co-operate with the police,” said SMC mayor Bikash Ghosh.

“Earlier, we had decided to start it in the Pradhannagar police station area. However, the incidents in the last couple of weeks — from the blast to the seizure of explosive devices from two different places — has prompted us to do a rethink. I am now appealing to all residents, irrespective of which police station they report to, to furnish detailed information about their tenants,” the mayor added.

Siliguri municipality comprises 47 wards.

Apart from Pradhannagar, the other two police stations are Siliguri and Bhaktinagar.
