Darjeeling, Dec. 2: The Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists (CPRM), one of the major Opposition parties in the hills, has decided to mobilise public opinion for the DGHC election by holding a month-long Jagrati Abhyan from January.

Central committee leaders of the party have decided to reach out to the masses in every nook and corner of the hills to spell out its political agenda and throw light on the ?misrule? of the DGHC by the GNLF.

R.B. Rai, the general secretary of the CPRM, said a ?white paper on the DGHC to expose the GNLF?s mismanagement? would also be released on December 15 to mark the foundation day of the party. ?In a way, this would also be the party?s manifesto for the coming DGHC election,? said Rai.

Though the CPRM maintained that it was willing to go for a seat-sharing arrangement with the CPM and be part of the People?s Democratic Front ? an anti-Ghisingh coalition in the hills ? in its fight against the GNLF, Rai said it was necessary that the party have its own distinct political identity. ?We have our own stand on various issues and this might not be the same as the constituent parties of the PDF.

It is understood that the PDF will work on a Common Minimum Programme for the DGHC election after a meeting with its constituent partners.

?Let me make it clear that the sole aim of the CPRM is to achieve Gorkhaland. The party firmly believes that other alternatives like regional autonomy for the hills (a demand of the ABGL) or merger of Darjeeling Hills with Sikkim (an issue raised by Gorkha Rastriya Congress) will not be a suitable solution,? said Rai.

In fact, the CPRM, a breakaway faction of the CPM, was formed in 1996 to demand Gorkhaland. The CPRM?s post election stand could put the CPM in an uncomfortable position, since the party had always opposed the idea of Gorkhaland.
