The administration of Calcutta High Court issued a notification on Wednesday evening, saying only urgent cases would be heard through videoconferencing.

Earlier, the court had come out with an order announcing that physical hearing of cases would resume on June 11.

A large number of lawyers then objected to the decision and resolved not to attend the proceedings given the spread of Covid-19 in Bengal.

The court administration had said the state government would provide 15 buses to ferry its staff from various points of the city and its suburbs.

Although lawyers living in and around the city favoured early resumption of the courts, those living in districts were opposed to the move because of absence of transport facilities.

The normal functioning of the high court had stopped on March 20 because of the novel coronavirus. But important cases were taken up for hearing through videoconference.
