Calcutta, Jan. 8: Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra today said the attack on CPM MLA Abdur Rezzak Mollah showed that chief minister Mamata Banerjee was under the control of anti-socials and goons.

“Rezzak Mollah was attacked by Trinamul goons two days ago and he is nursing his injuries in a private hospital. I am told that the MRI test has revealed a fracture in his hip. Today, many of our cadres were attacked by the ruling party. Some of them suffered bullet injuries. This can happen only in Trinamul-run Bengal,” Mishra said at a demonstration in front of the Alipore office of the South 24-Parganas police superintendent.

The procession was organised to condemn the alleged Trinamul assault on former minister Mollah on Sunday.

“The chief minister had said before coming to power that she could control goons well. But from what is happening, it seems the goons and anti-socials control her. Trinamul hooligans have taken over the state and they are dictating terms to her,” Mishra added, hours after the alleged Trinamul attack in Bhangar on CPM supporters coming to attend the march in Calcutta.

Besides Left Front MLAs, the South 24-Parganas unit of the front also participated in the sit-in. CPM supporters came in a massive procession, which police said was 1.5km long, from Ballygunj station to the SP’s office. The supporters had been asked to gather at Ballygunj station first.

Mishra said the attack on Mollah was not an isolated incident as several Left activists had been killed and assaulted and party offices “burnt down” by ruling party “hooligans” in the past one-and-a-half years.

“Today’s Bhangar incident or the attack on Rezzak Mollah shouldn’t be seen in isolation. Many such incidents have been occurring across the state after Trinamul took over at Writers’ Buildings. The ruling party’s motive is to wipe out the Opposition with the help of musclemen,” Mishra said.

He urged today’s gathering to build up a strong movement against Trinamul and the state government so that people realise the extent of “anarchy” in several parts of the state.

“Build up a movement against Trinamul and this government, which is supporting hooliganism. I am asking you all not to fall into a Trinamul trap. The time has come not only to protest but also to resist,” the leader of the Opposition said.

Mishra led a delegation of Left MLAs to governor M.K. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan this evening and apprised him of the developments in Bhangar.

CPM leaders termed the rally, which culminated in the sit-in, a “huge success”. They said 50,000 people had participated in it.

“When the head of the rally had reached the Lake View Road-Rashbehari Avenue crossing, its tail was at Gariahat. It was about 1.5km long,” a police officer said.

Other than Mishra, CPM state secretariat members Mohammad Salim, Rabin Deb and Sujan Chakraborty addressed the Alipore meeting.
