City gets first bus display board

The first electronic board displaying bus routes and the estimated time of arrival for buses was set up at the Exide crossing near Haldiram under the AJC Bose Road flyover today.Eight such boards will be set up across the city in collaboration with traffic police and one each in Sector V and New Town, a West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) official said."Most of the new-age buses in our fleet have GPS-based live tracking units. Based on the data of real-time movement of these buses, a software will generate information for use at a particular bus stop," he said. The software will take into account the travel time of a bus on a particular route, the nature of traffic congestion at various times and then correlate the data to the real-time movement of the bus and work out an estimated time of arrival at a particular stop. The transport corporation - a new body formed after merging Calcutta Tramways Corporation, West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation and Calcutta State Transport Corporation - has been struggling to embrace technology to reduce revenue leaks and increase efficiency with partial World Bank funding. The first such step was creating the Pathadisha app for Android phones that helped people track the real-time movement of buses.Next, the corporation tied up with Google to provide real-time information on location and arrival/departure time of buses in the city.At least 700 buses from the existing fleet of 1,200 are tied to Google Maps. Installing display boards is in line with these technological advancements, the transport official said. Text by Kinsuk Basu
