Found dead

Anwar Ali Purkait, a 40-year-old labour contractor who had been missing since Saturday, was found dead on a deserted stretch at Kachrapatti in Nadial on Monday. A man named Saifuddin Mollah has been arrested. Family sources said Anwar went missing after a fight with a promoter who he had been supplying labourers. Police said bloodstains and a plastic bag smeared with blood were found at a plot the promoter is developing.

Pool order

The high court today asked the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) to hand over its swimming pool in Garia to an organisation that used to run it till the civic body locked the premises last week. The order followed a submission by the organisation, Bhasaman, that children were missing their swimming classes because of the civic body's decision.

The CMC had leased out the pool on Asha Purna Devi Sarani to Bhasaman. "The pool was taken back after the lease ended," said Debasish Kumar, the mayoral council member in charge of parks and gardens. "How can the CMC lock the pool without serving any notice to the petitioner organisation? The CMC should have given a chance to the organisation to renew the lease term," Justice Harish Tandon said.

Kumar said the civic body would challenge the order.

Arrested

Pratap Mondal, a 27-year-old Duttabad resident, has been arrested for allegedly molesting a Class V student.
