The chargesheet in connection with the seizure of Rs 20.07 crore from the house of of an official of the erstwhile Bally Municipality was filed in Bankshal court on Friday.

The 110-page chargesheet, filed by the anti-corruption branch of the state police, accuses Pranab Adhikary, the sub-assistant engineer of the municipality, wife Krishna and son Tanmoy of amassing the unaccounted for cash.

The names of 50 people find mention as witnesses.

The CPM's Arunabha Lahiri - the last chairman of the civic body, which has been merged with the Howrah Municipal Corporation - has been named as a suspect as it was during his tenure that Adhikary had allegedly amassed a major part of the money.

"We have mentioned in the chargesheet that evidence has been found against Lahiri. Officers are probing his role. We may name him as an accused in a supplementary chargesheet, which will be submitted later," said an officer of the anti-corruption branch, which raided Adhikary's house in Ghusuri on August 14 and seized the money.

Adhikary, as sub-assistant engineer of Bally Municipality, was in charge of sanctioning buildings plans in Liluah. The police suspect he had extorted the money from promoters in exchange of sanctioing building plans.

Officers who had carried out the raid said bundles of currency notes were found stashed in every corner of Adhikary's two-storeyed house, right from an empty commode to the gap between a false ceiling and the roof. A toilet was constructed on the first floor to stash the money.

A team of 20 officers spent an entire night to count the cash with the help of four counting machines.

Bally Municipality had been under the Left Front rule since 1980 till its merger with the Howrah civic body. Lahiri was its chairman for the last five years.
