Alipurduar, Feb. 6: Chamurchi Tea Estate would be reopened tomorrow after an agreement was reached at a tripartite meeting held in the joint labour commissioner’s office in Siliguri yesterday.
On January 22 around 54 workers had received only half their wages.
The management of Chamurchi said the workers had not worked for the stipulated eight hours and that was why their wages were deducted.
As a result, a group of 100 workers allegedly entered general manager Gyan Prakash Dixit’s office and surrounded him demanding their full salary. The workers allegedly damaged furniture too.
Around 8pm, Dixit was compelled to pay the full wages to the workers. At midnight the management including the general manager left the garden.
On January 23, the garden management issued a notice of suspension of work in the garden and submitted a copy of the same to the Banarhat police.
Jiaul Alam, the secretary of Jalpaiguri District Committee of CITU, said: “The management cannot deduct the wage of any worker without giving any justified reason. In the meeting yesterday the management assured us that this kind of a step would not be taken in future. The workers also promised us that they would perform their duties properly.”
Amitangshu Chakroborty, an advisor to the Indian Tea Planter’s Association, said : “The workers have assured peace in the garden. On March 4, a meeting would be held to discuss the jobs to be done by the workers in the garden. The management has decided to reopen the garden tomorrow.”
