| The last remaining piece from the collapsed slab of the VIP Road flyover has been removed from the Kestopur canal, paving the way for reconstruction to begin. Documents of the lowest bidder — GPT Infra Projects, a subsidiary of the Tantia Group — for the reconstruction have been forwarded to government agency Rites for technical and financial evaluation. GPT Infra Projects quoted Rs 15 crore to rebuild the 40m gap on the EM Bypass-bound flank of the flyover, between piers 19 and 20, that collapsed in March. “We are awaiting ratification from Rites whether the lowest bidder (among three companies) is fit to carry out the work,” a CMDA official said. CMDA officials had initially sought a pre-Puja deadline to reopen the north-south flank of the flyover, but now they claim that it wouldn’t be ready before the yearend. Other than bridging the gap, the construction firm will check the suspended slabs between pillars on both sides of the damaged portion and the adjacent flank. Pictures by Amit Datta |
