Aug. 20: The repaired Chingrihata flyover that connects the Bypass to Sector V in Salt Lake is scheduled to reopen early next month.
Buses on 34 routes that pass through Sector V, New Town and Rajarhat have been taking a detour through the Beleghata Traffic Guard signal since the flyover was closed to heavy vehicles a little over two months ago.
The flyover may remain out of bounds for trucks and trailers, but Lalbazar wants to reopen the elevated route for buses as quickly as possible. "The width of the Bypass constricts where the Chingrihata flyover starts, causing congestion. If buses are allowed to take the flyover, it will ease the problem," an officer said.
Inaugurated in 2005, the Chingrihata flyover was one of the five elevated corridors identified by RITES as being in need of extensive repairs. The safety audit had been commissioned after the Vivekananda Road flyover collapsed in March 2016.
