Van burns in lottery rage

Cooch Behar, April 26: Agitated villagers set a Maruti van on fire at Dhangdhingguri to vent their ire on a club that failed to give away prizes for the lottery it had organised.

Yuba Natya Krira Sandtha club had sold tickets for the lottery over the past four months. Yesterday, the scheduled lucky draw did not take place. An altercation over the matter ensued resulting in the van being burnt.

Police, led by inspector-in-charge Jyotibikash De, arrived and dispersed the warring groups. Fire brigade personnel later doused the fire.

District superintendent of police S. S. Panda said an inquiry had been started. “The local police station has asked been asked to take necessary steps. Complaints have been received against club members Parinmal Tarafdar, Dibakar Das and Pulin Chandra Roy.”


Land death

Raiganj: Bauluddin Sheikh, 70, a resident of Selimpur village in Itahar police station area, was beaten to death by his brother on Monday. Akalu Sheikh, 45, killed Bauluddin after an altercation over the possession of land. Neighbours said the brothers always fought over the issue.


Inauguration

Siliguri: A new building, Door Siksha Bhawan, was opened on Monday for the directorate of distance education, North Bengal University. The distance education wing of the NBU was, for so long,housed in the office of adult and continuing education.


Arrest

Siliguri: Pradhan Nagar police arrested two wanted criminals, Asok Sarkar and Netai Sarkar, on Sunday. They were arrested from a hideout near NH- 31 following a tip-off.


New panel

Siliguri: Siliguri Merchants’ Association has elected a new executive body. Sujit Bose has been elected president of the 15 member panel and Om Prakash Agarwal, the general secretary. Other members include, Naresh Tibrewal, Bhagwati Prasad Dalmia and Sanjay Prasad Sinhal.


Security

Siliguri: Vigil has been intensified on the Indo-Nepal border in north Bengal to check untoward incidents. The block police stations of Naxalbari, Kharibari and Phansidewa have been alerted to keep a close tab on the movement along the border.


Press Club

Jalpaiguri: The new Jalpaiguri Press Club building was inaugurated at Kadamtala on Saturday. A debate titled Feel Good- a Spectroscope, was held at the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad hall to mark the occasion.
