Siliguri, Feb. 25: Association of Radio and Television Engineering Employees, Kurseong, today organised a sit-in at the All India Radio premises in the town. They were protesting against the bifurcation of East zone into Northeast and East zones.
“The promotional avenues of the subordinate engineering staff will be hampered tremendously if the bifurcation takes place,” a press release said.
Siliguri: Five criminals were arrested on Wednesday and a pipe gun and a round of live ammunition recovered from them. Acting on a tip off, a police team caught the gang. During interrogation, they told police that they were about to execute a “plan”.
Islampur: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) authorities held an interactive session with Islampur customers at Netaji Subhas Manch on Wednesday. Several local organisations, including Islampur Merchants’ Association, Lions Club and Islampur Nagarik Committee, have demanded a high-level inquiry into the poor service offered by BSNL in the area.
Islampur: Thirty-five-year- old housewife Aleya Khatoon of Chaklagachh under Islampur police station died after consuming poison on Tuesday night. Police said the body has been sent for postmortem and they were investigating the case.
Siliguri: Siliguri police have initiated special patrolling along Bengal’s border with Bihar. The move is spurred by recent reports that Bihar-based criminal gangs were accessing Siliguri. “Recently, we have found that gangs from Bihar have forged links with local criminals. This nexus needs to be broken,” said a senior district police officer.
Gangtok: Sonam Bhutia, a constable of the Special bureau, Government of India, stationed at Chungthang, a subdivisional town in north Sikkim, was found dead around midnight on Tuesday. Police are investigating the case.
