Three found dead

Cooch Behar Nov. 10: Three fishermen were found dead in a village near Dinhata along the Indo-Bangladesh border this morning.

According to police, seven fishermen from Dakshin Lauchapara had gone to Satyanarayanerchhara lake, 5km away, around 10pm yesterday. They were waiting for the dawn to break to cast nets. The fishermen slept beside a kutcha road near the waterbody. Around 1.30am, three men woke up to find that four of their companions were lying on the ground with blood oozing from their heads. The deceased were Alam Haque, 17, Jamal Byapari, 40, and Hazrat Byapari, 22. Saidul Byapari has been admitted to the subdivisional hospital in Dinhata in an unconscious state. The police said the remaining three were being questioned.


Bandh call

Cooch Behar: The Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party has called a 24-hour bandh in six districts of north Bengal on November 15, demanding the release of their leader Bangshi Badan Barman and 42 supporters. President of the party Ashutosh Barma said: “We have been compelled to call the bandh. The judicial process in this case is very slow.”


Bhutan gate

Jaigaon: The timing for the opening of the gates leading to Bhutan have been brought forward for Chhat Puja that begins from Thursday. Secretary of the Jaigaon Chhat Puja Committee Krishna Gupta said an appeal had been made to the police chief of Bhutan’s Chukha district. On Monday, the Bhutan official confirmed that the gates would be opened at 2am on November 13 so that devotees could congregate on the banks of the Torsa river before sunrise. The gates open at 5.30am and shut at 9.30pm everyday.


Neuro meet

Siliguri: The 24th annual conference of the Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India will be held here on November 13 and 14. N. R. Haldar, the secretary of the organising committee, said around 150 doctors and neuroscientists from eastern India will participate in the event.
