Trader returns to town

Siliguri, April 9: Naveen Agarwal, the young businessman who has been missing since Wednesday, returned home in the afternoon today. Police, however, said they would investigate the case and interrogate Agarwal to find out if the trader had been kidnapped and a deal struck for his release.

Darjeeling superintendent of police Rajeev Mishra said: “Naveen has come back. We are investigating all possible aspects of the case. We will interrogate him shortly.”


Girl rescued

Siliguri: A 17-year-old girl, who had gone missing three months ago from her home in Sevoke under Matigara police station, was brought back on Friday. Pranab Sikdar, officer-in-charge of Matigara police station, said the girl was rescued from a red-light area in Mumbai. “Acting on a tip-off, our team went to Mumbai, from where the girl was brought back. We believe she was sold off by girl traffickers. Investigations are on,” Sikdar said.


Loyalty change

Siliguri: Jalpaiguri district committee member of Forward Bloc Tapan Dhar joined the Trinamul Congress on Friday. General secretary of Darjeeling district Trinamul Congress Gautam Deb said Dhar, along with his supporters, has joined the Trinamul Congress. Two senior Darjeeling Congress Committee members Bijoy Singha and Gobindo Roy too joined the Trinamul Congress.


BJP rift

Siliguri: The rift within the various factions of the Darjeeling district BJP further widened on Friday with the party's Khoribari and Phansidewa units voicing their resentment against the fielding of former chairman of School Service Commission (hills) G.S. Yonzone as the party's candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency. Party general secretary of Darjeeling district Balram Chhetri said the Khoribari and Phansidewa units of the BJP have send a faxed message to party president Venkiah Naidu to withdraw Yonzone’s candidature and field Sanjay Thakuri.


IMA posts

Siliguri: The Siliguri chapter of the Indian Medical Association has elected a new executive body for the coming financial year. The new office bearers are Priti Ranjan Sen (president), Tapan Maitra and Arani Chakraborty (vice-presidents), Mridula Chatterjee (secretary), T.K. Kar and R.N. Bhattacharya (joint secretaries), Bidyut Biswas (assistant secretary) and S.K. Gupta (treasurer).
