Jaigaon, March. 1: Burglars had to abandon an attempt to rob a bank midway at Moulani last night after police reached the spot.
The police said the robbers were breaking the lock of a vault at the Moulani branch of Uttarbanga Kshetriya Gramin Bank when local people heard the noise and called up a law enforcers’ team on patrol. The gang managed to escape when the police reached the spot. The subdivisional police officer of Malbazar, A. Sarkar, said there were seven-eight members in the gang.
Siliguri: A 35-year-old man was run over by a truck at NJP on Thursday. The deceased,Jeevan Sarkar, was a resident of Bhaktinagar. Police seized the truck and arrested the driver after the mishap.
Islampur: A snatcher was caught by people at Islampur bus stand on Thursday when he was fleeing with a teacher’s bag that contained Rs 62,000. The primary school teacher, Rupsingh Das, had withdrawn the amount from a bank and was waiting for a bus with the money that was kept in the bag. Police said the man snatched the bag from Das and started running. When Das shouted for help, the local people chased the robber and caught him. He was handed over to the police. The arrested man hasn’t been identified yet.
Islampur: The body of a 22-year-old trader was recovered from the bank of the Teesta at Shibnagar Colony on Thursday. Islampur police said Md. Selim had been missing from Monday. The police suspect that he was murdered and have started an investigation.
Jaigaon: Officers of the Jalpaiguri forest division recovered the carcass of a five-month-old sambar from the bank of the Diana near Dharanipur tea garden on Thursday. The foresters said the male sambar had died after a fall from a high place.
