Raiganj, Oct. 16: A 17-year-old-boy of a home run by the mass education department here was found hanging from the ceiling of his room today.
Sadhan Sinha, the superintendent of the Raiganj Child Welfare Society, said Sushil Biswas’s body was first seen by another boarder.
Sushil was a Class X student of the nearby Gayala Boys High School.
The investigating officer, Sanjoy Mukherjee, said Sushil had committed suicide. “The nylon rope he used to hang himself had been procured from somewhere else.”
The body has been sent for post-mortem.
According to Sinha, Sushil had left for his home at Dakshin Belbari in South Dinajpur on October 5 for Puja, but came back much earlier than he was scheduled to. “He was supposed to come back after October 14 or Lakshmi Puja, but he walked in on October 10. When I asked him why he had returned earlier than expected, the boy had replied that he would be better off preparing for the Madhyamik exams in the hostel,” Sinha said.
Tapas Roy, another boarder, said Sushil was not his usual self, but sad after his return from home.
Ganesh Biswas, the deceased’s elder brother who arrived here to claim the body, said: “There was no problem with my brother when he came home. But when he goaded us into cooking mutton, we refused as we remain vegetarians during Durga Puja. I had promised him that we would have mutton once the Puja was over, but he left for the hostel a day before Dasami.”
