The civic body's mayoral council on Wednesday passed a resolution to create a new borough with three wards from Joka and two wards each from two other boroughs.
Wards 142, 143 and 144 of Joka and Wards 123 and 124 of borough XIII, and wards 125 and 126 of borough XIV will form borough XVI. Wards 123, 124, 125 and 126 cover areas on the fringes of Behala, adjacent to Joka.
The new borough (XVI) will have its head office at Diamond Park, where the CMC set up its office after Joka I and Joka II panchayats were brought under its jurisdiction in 2012.
On May 27, the Assembly had passed a bill allowing the creation of the 16th borough.
A civic engineer said the three wards of Joka - covering 18.96sq km - are together equal to or bigger than each of the 15 boroughs.
