The North Dinajpur district unit of the BJP has decided to tweak the door-to-door campaign in favour of the central government’s citizenship initiatives after Raiganj MP and Union minister of state Debasree Chaudhuri faced unpleasant questions from the people of her constituency on Wednesday.

She was undertaking the door-to-door campaign at Indira Colony in Raiganj when residents surrounded her car and asked her why the Centre was creating panic in the name of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The protesters numbering about 250 also asked Chaudhuri what she had done for the constituency as an MP.

“We believe the protests were orchestrated by Trinamul. But simultaneously, we cannot undermine the panic that has spread among people over the CAA and the NRC (National Register of Citizens). Following the incident, a section of the North Dinajpur district BJP leadership wants to change the plan and wait for sometime. But some other leaders want to carry on with the door-to-door campaign and face Trinamul,” said a BJP insider.

Another district BJP leader said the party would continue to hold the door-to-door campaign, but in a different way. “On Wednesday, there were hardly 35-40 BJP supporters with the MP and soon, they were outnumbered as Trinamul activists launched the protests. From now on, our groups will be larger so that if Trinamul resorts to any protest, we can launch a counter-protest,” said the district leader.

Bapi Goswami, the Jalpaiguri district chief of the BJP, said the party had decided to drop the door-to-door campaign.

“Instead, we will hold street corner meetings and marches at booth and block levels. Local leaders have been asked to arrange such programmes where we will campaign in favour of the CAA. We don’t want BJP leaders and workers to face harassment in the hands of Trinamul supporters,” said Goswami.

He said the BJP would hold a march and meeting in Jalpaiguri on January 20 and state chief Dilip Ghosh would be present.

In Siliguri, the BJP will continue with its door-to-door campaign to convince people of the need for the CAA, said Pravin Agarwal, president of Siliguri (organisational) district of the party.
