Jaigaon, June 18: Bhutan has chosen the logo that will be used to mark the centenary celebrations of the monarchy and the coronation of the new king, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, in 2008.

The chairman of the national steering committee for the centenary celebrations, Lyonpo Jigmi Y. Thinley, and Dorji Lopen, a member of the central monastic body, released the logo on June 13.

There had been 164 entries from across the country and the selected logo is a combination of the two best ones from Bhutan Times Limited and Jigme Loday, an artist in the education ministry. They were awarded Ngultrum 1,00,000 and Ngultrum 50,000 respectively.

The Bhutanese currency is on a par with Indian rupees.

Dasho Wangda, the joint secretary of Bhutan’s home ministry, said the logo contains features related to both the coronation and the centenary of the monarchy.

The number 100 is present on the logo in Bhutanese numerals. Behind it, the raven crown can be seen against a backdrop of yellow and orange, the colours of the national flag. Streaks of five different colours also appear, signifying the fifth succession to the golden throne, Wangda said. The white colour at the bottom of the crown represented purity of thoughts and deeds of the fourth and fifth kings.

The joint secretary said the steering committee would soon get the logo registered as a trademark and copyrighted. It would be franchised for use in apparel, jewellery, audio-visual products and stationary.

“We want the logo to be made available to people from all walks of life,” Wangda said.
