Bengal logs 50 Covid cases, 116 recoveries

There is a drop in the total of active cases by 50 to 1,587

Bengal on Monday logged 50 Covid-19 infections, including six from Calcutta.

The state also logged 116 recoveries and zero deaths, resulting in a drop in the total of active cases by 50 to 1,587.

Monday was 50 consecutive days of a drop in the total of active cases in the third wave, resulting in improvement by 99 per cent in the total since January 17. Prior to this turnaround, the total active caseload had gone up by nearly 22 times between December 28 and January 16 to 1.6 lakh.

The positive confirmation rate was 0.35 per cent on Monday. The rate has been below 1 per cent for 18 consecutive days. This was 38 consecutive days of the state reporting a positive confirmation rate of less than 5 per cent.

Deemed a crucial indicator in the pandemic, a positive confirmation rate up to 5 per cent is considered tolerable. On January 10, the rate had reached an all-time high of 37.32.

The recovery rate is 98.87 per cent. Between December 29 and January 16, it had dropped by eight percentage points, before recovering by over eight percentage points.

The state’s mortality rate is 1.05 per cent.

There have been nearly 20.16 lakh cases since the first was detected in the state in March 2020. The total includes over 19.93 lakh recoveries and 21,180 deaths.
