Singur, July 3: Members of the committee set up to facilitate the return of land in Singur today said plots would not be given back from the 27 acres in Singherbheri mouza, near the Durgapur Expressway.

A committee member said the 27 acres formed the front portion of the abandoned Tata small-car factory. “The land had been developed by Tata Motors. It is not fit for agriculture…. So, we decided not to return land from there,” he said.

The government had acquired 997 acres across five mouzas in Singur for the Tata Motors project in 2006. They are Gopalnagar, Singherbheri, Bajemelia, Khaserbheri and Beraberi.

Officials today pasted a list of 1,705 farmers who had applied for return of land. The list, dated July 2, was put up at the BDO office.

“We today hung a list of 1,705 farmers who are entitled to return of land and have submitted applications at the BDO office. The list also mentions the size of the plots acquired from each farmer,” a district official said.

Survey of land at Bajemelia began today. Officials, however, said they were uncertain about completing the survey by tomorrow, the deadline set by industries minister Partha Chatterjee.

“Our work is being hampered by frequent rains. We may not be able to complete the survey by Monday,” an official said.

The district magistrate, Sripriya Rengarajan, had said offices would be kept open to receive applications today, despite it being a Sunday. However, only three applications were submitted.

“Most farmers went to Mahesh (20km from Singur) today to watch a rath yatra,” Becharam Manna, the Haripal MLA, said.
