Malda, March 15: A five-month-old girl died soon after being administered a dose of polio vaccine at a pulse polio booth in a village in Kaliachak yesterday.

Another girl, the one-year-old Priya Karmakar, was admitted to a health centre in Gajole after she started vomiting yesterday. The girl had been given polio drops at a camp in Mongalbari.

Kaliachak police seized the polio vials after Ashok Basak, the father of the deceased, had lodged an FIR.

The health department is also conducting a probe at the instance of the district magistrate of Malda, Sridhar Ghosh, to find out the cause of the baby’s death in Gonsaintala village.

Basak said they had taken the baby to the booth to administer polio vaccine around 12 noon. “When we came back home, we found that the baby was not responding. We rushed her to Bedrabad primary health centre where she was declared brought-dead. My daughter was absolutely alright when she was taken to the camp,” a sobbing Basak said.

Chief medical officer of health Srikanta Roy said it was too early to comment on the cause of the death.

“The polio vaccine is being sent to Calcutta for forensic tests. Besides, the body of the baby has been sent for post-mortem. Things will become clear after we receive the reports on both the tests. More than 100 children were administered pulse polio at the camp. So far, we have not received any adverse report,” said Roy.
