People throng the lawns of Government House (Raj Bhavan) on August 15, 1947. The following is an excerpt from a report in the Hindustan Standard printed the day after. In the exuberance of joy, a surging crowd flung open the guarded gates of Government House, Calcutta, yesterday (Friday) morning when Sj. Chakravarty Rajagopalachari, the first Governor of the new province of West Bengal, was ceremoniously hoisting the Flag of the Dominion of India to mark the dawn of independence.
The Tumultuous crowd of common man dashed through the gates elbowing one another, raising deafening shouts of “Bande Mataram” and “Jai Hind” and throwing to the four winds the dignity and authority that had been associated with Government House for generations past in the exhilaration of new found freedom.
...As the invasion started Sj. Rajagopalachari who had by the time returned to the House came out in the verandha overlooking the gardens in the south.
The seething mass of humanity below greeted him with cries of “Rajaji ki Jai” and “Bande Mataram”. (sic)
