Siliguri, Sept. 7: Attention star-gazers!

Experts from Pune and Calcutta will soon be here to speak on the application of modern technology in the study of astronomy and astrophysics and the evolving opportunities in these spheres.

The two-day convention — Astronomy for Engineers — will be organised here by the Techno India Group and will begin on Sunday. The Techno India Group runs Siliguri Institute of Technology (SIT) and the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics at North Bengal University (NBU).

Though meant for undergraduate and postgraduate students of computer science, IT, electronics and communications, instrumentation and electrical engineering, the lectures are open to the public too, said SIT director N.K. Singh. A guest lecture on comets by Amalendu Bandopadhyay of the Positional Astronomy Centre, Calcutta, will be one of the prime attractions at the meet, he said.

The workshop will be followed by a four-day hands-on technical training by the same faculty at NBU, where members of the varsity’s physics department will get an insight into the methods and techniques of astronomy and the use of astronomical software.
