Siliguri: Mayor Asok Bhattacharya said on Monday that he had plans to launch a "fast unto death" with all Left Front councillors in front of the office of the department of municipal affairs in Calcutta to get funds for the civic body.
Since 2015, when Asok has assumed the mayor's post, he has time and again alleged that the state government is not allotting funds to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation as it is run by the Left. Despite several communications with ministers, officials and even the chief minister, the SMC has been allegedly been denied funds.
"We will seek an appointment with the state municipal affairs minister in October to apprise him how the civic body is facing problems due to non-allocation of funds. If we are not allowed to meet the minister, we will sit in front of his office for an indefinite hunger strike," said Asok.
He also mentioned that if the state still did not make any move (allot funds to the SMC), the Left board will take legal steps.
"We would then move court, seeking justice. The municipal corporation here has been deprived of funds for the past three years. The state cannot be biased as the board was formed on the basis of the mandate of Siliguri residents." Asok, who is also the Siliguri MLA, said.
Sources said the mayor had planned the moves at a time when informal talks were on between Congress and Trinamul councillors over the proposal of tabling a no-confidence motion against the Left board.
"The Left is a minority in the board. It seems CPM leaders want to drive home the point that they did their best to get funds from the state during their tenure in case they face any such allegation from the opposition," said a source.
