EM Bypass: A chef of a restaurant in Salt Lake's Sector V had his right arm crushed under the front wheels of a bus near Science City on EM Bypass after he lost balance and fell off his two-wheeler on Saturday afternoon.

The bus driver managed to slam the brakes just in time to stop the wheels from going over Robin Biswa's head.

Alerted by a passerby, officers of the Tiljala traffic guard arranged an ambulance within minutes and rushed Robin to Calcutta National Medical College, ensuring that the entire stretch down Parama flyover was turned into a green corridor and the ambulance didn't have to stop anywhere.

Robin was on his way to work from his south Calcutta home when the accident occurred on the down slope of Ambedkar Bridge.

"He was riding down the northern slope of the bridge on a scooty. While going downhill, he lost balance and fell," a senior officer of the Tiljala traffic guard said. "The bus was right behind. The driver applied the brakes but one of the front wheels rolled over his right arm."

The driver of the Barasat-Baruipur bus was arrested and a case of rash and negligent driving filed against him.

Robin's colleagues reached Calcutta National Medical College soon after he was taken there. "We received a call from police informing us about the accident and immediately reached Calcutta National Medical College. Doctors said Robin's arm was in a very bad shape and would have to be amputated. We took him to SSKM Hospital," said one Robin's colleagues.

Doctors in the emergency ward of SSKM checked on Robin but told his family members that with no senior consultant around on a Saturday, they would have to wait for sometime before he could be admitted to a ward and operated upon. "He was shifted to a ward around 7.30pm," a family member said.
