Amdanga: Three persons were killed in clashes on Tuesday between Trinamul and the CPM over formation of panchayat boards at Amdanga in North 24-Parganas.

Over 300 bombs were hurled during the skirmishes that chief minister Mamata Banerjee described as "unhealthy politics". The formation of boards in the area has been put off indefinitely because of the violence that left over 25 persons injured.

Trinamul leaders claimed that two of the dead, Kuddus Gani, 35, and Nasir Halder, 25, were party workers. Mozaffar Piyada, 35, was alleged to be a CPM activist.

Police sources said a mob of 200 cut off power supply and barged into Gani's house in Taraberia - the village where the clashes started on Tuesday morning and spread to adjoining villages - and shot him dead on Tuesday night. The officer-in-charge of Amdanga police station, Manas Das, has been removed.

"Unhealthy politics is taking place. We want to stop the killings. A lot of our people have been murdered, too," Mamata said. The Amdanga deaths have taken to nine the number of those killed in violence linked to the panchayat boards in the past four days.

In Taraberia, the bone of contention, Trinamul won nine seats and the CPM seven in the 19-member panchayat. The BJP, Congress and an Independent won one each. Minister Jyotipriya Mullick claimed CPM and BJP supporters had carried out the attacks as the Independent had confirmed his support for Trinamul.

The CPM blamed Trinamul. "They know the CPM would form the board. That's why they carried out the attacks," CPM MP Mohammad Salim said. BJP state general secretary Sayantan Basu alleged "terror by police, mafia and ruling party goons".
