Canning: A Class XII student was attacked with a razor in Canning, South 24-Parganas, on Tuesday night for protesting a neighbour's drinking in the open, police said.

Faiuddin Khan said in his complaint lodged with Canning police station that Munna Laskar attacked him around 9.30pm near his house in Taldi.

"He hurled abuses at me when I protested his drinking on the road near my house," Khan said in his complaint.

"I again protested. He started raining blows on me. When I tried to resist, he took out a razor from his trouser pocket and slashed my face."

Laskar has been at large since the attack, police said. On hearing his screams, residents of the area stepped out of their homes and Laskar fled.

Several people told cops that Laskar drank in the open every evening and passed lewd remarks at women. Some said he had hit them in the past.

Laskar and his associates are known for causing trouble.

"Residents of the area told us that Laskar and his associates often drank in the open. At times they drank in the fields," an officer said.

"On several occasions, they were seen sitting by the roadside and drinking."

No one from the area had complained earlier, the police said. Raids at multiple places have drawn a blank.

Last month a couple were assaulted in Canning when they protested a group of men drinking in the field near their house, the police said.

Three arrested

Three youths were arrested for ransacking a restaurant and beating up a waiter in Durgarpur on Monday night.

Employees of the restaurant told police six youths had come to the eatery at Steel Park in the New Township police station area and started hurling abuses after drinking. When other customers protested, the youths turned violent.

The police arrested three, while the rest fled.
