Metro services were disrupted for at least half an hour on Thursday after a middle-aged man jumped in front of a Kavi Subhash-bound train in Shyambazar at 9.33am, police said.

The train had to be reversed for guards to get down on the tracks and pull out Amiya Kumar Mondal, 55, from the train’s undercarriage, a Metro official said.

Mondal, an assistant sub-inspector with the city police’s special branch, was declared dead at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Services between Central and Dum Dum in both directions were stopped. Truncated services ran between Central and New Garia in both directions from 9.47am till 10.09am, when full services resumed, the Metro official said.

Gaurab Aditya Dhar, a student of St Xavier’s College who had boarded a Tollygunge-bound train in Chandni Chowk around the time, said there was an announcement that services had been suspended and passengers were asked to get off the train.

“I was headed to Jatin Das Park... the announcement did not say clearly why the train had stopped and did not specify when services were likely to resume,” Aditya Dhar said.

He said the train was packed because it was rush hour and almost everyone tried to run out of the train.

“Metro officials should be more adept at handling crowds because such occurrences keep happening,” he said. “There was a lot of commotion and confusion at the station.”

On Tuesday, services were disrupted for an hour after a middle-aged man committed suicide at Rabindra Sadan station during the evening rush hour.

The East-West Metro stations will be fitted with platform screen doors to prevent suicide attempts.

Footpath repair

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will restore the footpath along the southern flank of Burdwan Road, between its crossings with Diamond Harbour Road and Alipore Road.

The work will cost Rs 4.38lakh and take over a month to be completed.
