Siliguri, March 20: The Sanias and Souravs have had their day. Siliguri is suffering from Subhajit fever now.

The residents? new fixation is understandable: the boy from the town, Subhajit Saha, did the country proud today by helping the men?s team win the gold medal in table tennis at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

Among Subhajit?s countless fans here, who had been hoping desperately for his success in Melbourne, none could have been happier than his mother, Dipti. She was the one who picked up the phone when, around 4.30 pm today, Subhajit called his home at East Vivekananda Palli here to tell his family of his success.

?You would not believe how happy his call has made me today. I was thrilled, spellbound, overwhelmed,? a proud Dipti gushed. Shedding tears of happiness, she said it was her dream come true. A confident son?s confident mother also expressed hope that his son would win another gold in the singles event coming up soon at the Games.

In fact, confidence has been the secret of the 23-year-old paddler?s success. Right after he returned from Jaipur last month after being crowned as the new national table tennis champion there, Subhajit had expressed his belief about being successful in Melbourne.

Today he fulfilled his promise.

Subhajit?s father Ajay Nath Saha is one person who never doubted his son?s abilities. A beaming Saha senior said today that he always knew that his son had the potential. ?Subhajit deserves it. Rather he deserves more,? Saha said.

Subhajit?s coach Amit Dam is also overwhelmed by his student?s success. ?He has made me proud. He has made Siliguri proud. This boy will go far ? the sky is the limit for him. I wish him all success,? he said.

Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation Bikash Ghosh and Siliguri District Table Tennis Association?s Kuntal Goswami have congratulated Subhajit over the phone in Melbourne. State Urban Development minister and Siliguri MLA Asok Bhattacharya also expressed his happiness over the success of Subhajit.
