Ultadanga: Auto drivers on the Ultadanga-Salt Lake route on Tuesday demanded excess fare and plied on truncated routes triggering a commuter blockade at the Ultadanga crossing for some hours.

Several people told Metro that drivers had been demanding Rs 100 to ferry them till Sector V when the normal fare is Rs 15.

They said drivers took advantage of the fact that most buses were crowded.

Police had a tough time controlling traffic as the blockade triggered a snarl that stretched till Hatibagan. The protesters relented and lifted the blockade after officers of Ultadanga police station promised to take action.

Sanjana Dey, a Shyambazar resident who works in Sector V, said an auto driver told her that she could either pay Rs 100 or travel hanging out of a bus. "When I refused, he sped away."
