Reading the article, ‘Stop! Puja Here’ published in The Telegraph Howrah on September 27, I wondered whether Calcutta High Court orders were applicable in Howrah town. During Durga and Kali puja and every other festival, blocking roads seem to be a ritual. Many puja committees erect pandals right across the road blocking more than half of the carriageway.

Worse still are on the days of bhog distribution when members of the puja committees completely block the roads using large bamboo poles.

Despite facing immense trouble travelling on the road during these days, local people never protest fearing harassment. It is public knowledge that the clubs enjoy political patronage. This has only served to embolden the puja organisers. I only hope that the administration will look into the matter and take necessary action.
