Calcutta, Nov. 1: An IPS officer’s mother today lodged a police complaint of assault and trespass against him.

Anirban Ray, deputy inspector-general (border) with Bengal police’s intelligence branch, has been accused by his mother Reba of forcibly entering her Salt Lake home.

“We have started a case of assault and trespassing on the basis of the complaint lodged by Reba Ray. The law will take its own course. We have started an investigation,” said Debasish Dhar, the additional deputy commissioner of police, Bidhannagar.

Reba, an advocate who lives in CE block, said there was an injunction on Anirban’s entry into the house.

“I live in the house alone. This is not the first time he has tried to barge in. Today, he brought some people with him and broke three gates. I went to the first-floor balcony and screamed for help. Some local youths saw my son beat me up, but no one helped me,” Reba said this evening.

She said that before Anirban entered the house, she had called the local police. “Had the police not reached on time, I don’t know what would have happened,” she added.

Anirban was not available for comment.

A senior officer of the Bidhannagar police commissionerate said the state home department would be informed about the case registered against Anirban.

“Had the alleged crime been committed in the capacity of a police officer, the Union home ministry’s permission would have been necessary for drawing up criminal charges against the IPS officer concerned,” the officer said.

Officers investigating the case said till now, they had not found any evidence to suggest that there was any legal bar on Anirban entering the Salt Lake house.
