High court upholds student's life term

Calcutta, Aug. 22: A division bench of the high court today upheld a judgment of a Nadia court sentencing to life a college student who killed his lover in 1991 and tried to end his own life.

“Love, considered to be one of the divine blessings bestowed on human soul, sometime takes its own toll, it appears from the fact of the present case,” Justices A.K. Basu and P.K. Deb observed.

“This is the darker side of the human being. It is a fact that the boy had committed the crime out of tremendous love towards the girl. But, the law will have to take its own way,” the judges added.

According to the case record, 18-year-old Sujoy Sen, of Thanarpara under Ranaghat police station fell in love with Anindita Sengupta, 18, a college student and resident of the same area.

Their relationship continued till Anindita’s father Pranab Sengupta threatened her with dire consequences if she continued with her relationship

When Sujoy failed to convince Anindita to carry on with the relationship, he throttling her to death. He then took poison himself.

After Anindita’s father informed the police, they arrived at Sujoy’s house to find him unconscious.

They admitted him to hospital and arrested him when he recovered.
