Calcutta police commissioner Anuj Sharma asked his force to remain vigilant against burglars and increase the duration of night patrolling during the festive season.
Sharma was speaking at the monthly crime conference on Tuesday where officers in charge of the police stations and their superiors were present.
The incidence of burglary usually increases during the festive season as people tend to stay away from home for longer hours.
“Sir (Sharma) told us to be careful against burglary and increase the duration of vigil in lanes and bylanes in residential areas,” said the officer-in-charge of a police station in the south division.
Calcutta police have been conducting naka checking at night — putting up check-posts and scanning vehicles — following an alleged heckling of a model by a gang of helmetless bikers near Maidan police station a few months ago.
Since then, on an average, 25 naka points are set up every night. The checking points are set up at new spots each night.
A senior officer who attended Tuesday’s meeting said the idea was to increase police visibility before the festive season.
The top cop also asked officers to execute all pending non-bailable arrest warrants and maintain case diaries in a better way.
“Many officers could not answer how many arrest warrants were pending in their jurisdiction. Sir asked them to come prepared the next time,” an officer said.
Pending arrest warrants are executed before elections and major festivals.
