2 die in car-bus collision

Malda, May 3: Two persons were killed and six others injured when the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus near Ekush Mile in Gajole around 11am today.

Police said there had been eight persons in the vehicle and the accident occurred when it was overtaking a bus. The car was on its way to Doulatpur village in Balurghat in South Dinajpur. The injured persons were taken to Gajole hospital. Later, four of them were referred to the district hospital in Malda.


Bullet injury

Raiganj: At least six villagers of Bariol suffered bullet injuries when residents of Bihar living across the Mahananda fired at them on Sunday evening, block development officer of Itahar Gangadhar Das said. Vegetable vendors from Bihar usually cross the river to sell their wares in Bariol. On Friday, people from both sides of the river clashed following which the administration called a peace meeting on Tuesday. An altercation also took place on Sunday.


Nathu-la trade

Gangtok: The Indo-China border trade through the 14,400-feet mountain pass in East Sikkim will begin on Monday for the current year. The trade is limited to businessmen of Sikkim and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It was resumed in 2006, 44 years after the 1962 Chinese aggression. “Traders from both sides have been invited to participate in the inaugural function,” Sikkim commerce and industries director Ujjwal Gurung said.


Fee hike ire

Siliguri: Parents protesting against fee hike in most ICSE and CBSE affiliated schools in Siliguri decided on Sunday to launch an agitation if administration failed to resolve the issue.


MLA arrested

Islampur: Tausif Alam, the Congress MLA of Bahadurganj in Bihar, was arrested by Kishanganj police from a roadside eatery at Panjipara in Goalpokhor on Sunday evening. He was picked up on charges of beating up a police officer on April 27.
