Tribute to a genius

Abacus, a mathematical society for children, in collaboration with Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri, celebrated the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan in the school on December 22.

A meeting was held under the presidentship of Ranjana Choudhury, retired head of the department of mathematics, Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati.

Indira Bordoloi, principal of Handique Girls College, graced the occasion as chief guest.

Both the teachers urged the students to learn mathematics sincerely and stressed the need to inculcate interest in the subject from childhood.

Students of Maharishi Vidya Mandir spoke on the life of the mathematical genius.

A maths model and chart competition was organised among school students of greater Guwahati.

The winners of the competition were given prizes in memory of noted personalities and mathematicians like Prof. Rajani Kanta Chakraborty, Phani Dutta, Rameswar Kalita, Prof. Bapu Krishna Choudhury, Chakradhar Goswami and Mujib Ahmed Hazarika.

Career tips

Delhi-based career counsellor Pervin Malhotra conducted a workshop at Sanskriti: The Gurukul, one of the best schools in the Northeast, in Guwahati on December 19.

The workshop was conducted for students from study centres IX to XII and their guardians.

Malhotra set the interactive tone for the session by dispensing with PowerPoint presentations and talking to the audience about the 3,000 plus careers up for grabs.

She explained solutions, using a mix of information and stories.

The counsellor encouraged students to stay in Assam and look for career options at home itself.

She asked them not to be wary of making career changes along the way

The interactive session saw students and parents bombarding her with question on new career options as well as asking specific ones like that about opportunities to study astronomy.

Malhotra had sent a detailed questionnaire to the students earlier to understand their views and thoughts. She analysed each of them and submitted a detailed report to each on the kind of options available to them, given their behavioural pattern.

CHIT CHAT

The flexible education unit of ICFAI organised a seminar on Interview Skills at ICFAI National College, Guwahati on December 21.

Manash C. Pakrashi, chief executive officer of Colortek and director of Unicem Paints India Private Limited, was the main speaker.

The main idea of the seminar was to highlight the methods to follow when appearing for an interview. Pakrashi enlightened the participants with topics like how to make the cover letter for the interview impressive, what should be an ideal CV, basic etiquettes, dos and don’ts before and after the interview, way of dressing, etc.
