An order by the railway ministry said while suburban fares remain unchanged, ordinary non-AC, non-suburban fares were hiked by 1 paise per km of journey from Wednesday.
The railways also announced a 2 paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and 4 paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes.
The Railways, in a statement, said in order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become imperative to increase the fare marginally without overburdening any class of passengers.
The price of milk in the city has been hiked from Rs 46 to Rs 49 per litre, with milk producers citing increased price of cattle feed and labour cost as factors for the hike in price, effective from Wednesday.
