No Looking back: Durga Boro |
Dibrugarh, June 30: Assam’s prolific striker Durga Boro, whose skill with the ball has made his current employers, petroleum giant Oil India FC, win many matches, will soon don the colours of Churchill Brothers of Goa for a year.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Durga said he had been able to catch the attention of the Churchill Brothers’ coach and team management during the last edition of the Federation Cup in Calcutta.
“Although, we never got to play against Churchill Brothers during the tournament, we faced some of the top teams of the nation like Mohun Bagan, Vasco and Air India. My performance during those matches were good and this was when I got noticed,” Durga said.
In principle, Durga’s current employer Oil India Ltd, which owns Oil India FC, has agreed to release him for a year, so that he can play for one of the best teams in the country. “We want him to hone his skills further in Goa so that he can improve. After that, if he wishes, he can come back,” an OIL official said.
Durga, now 23, was born and brought up in Gendrabil — a small village around 6km from Kokrajhar town.
He began playing football at a very tender age, but his first major tournament was the Subroto Cup in 1999 when he played for Kokrajhar HNMP School in the under-14 category.
“I am looking forward to playing for my new club and I am quite excited about it. Many of the top players of the country play for the club,” Durga said. The offer, he added, is very lucrative — a whopping Rs 11 lakh for the year, apart from free food, stay, travel and other perks.
