Three organisations in Manipur’s Senapati district on Tuesday called an indefinite economic blockade on National Highway 2 (Imphal-Mao highway) from Wednesday evening, asserting their demand for immediate suspension of deputy commissioner Somorjit Salam. He was incidentally transferred to neighbouring Kangpokpi district as its deputy commissioner on Monday night.
An emergency consultative meeting of the Naga People’s Organisation, Senapati District Students’ Association and Senapati District Women’s Association held at the district headquarters, on Tuesday resolved to extend its 48-hour ultimatum to the state government to fulfil their demand by another 24 hours.
The meeting resolved that if the government fails to place Salam under suspension by Wednesday evening, the organisations would impose an indefinite economic blockade along NH2 from 6pm the same day. Essential services, including media and stranded persons entering Manipur with valid permit, will be exempted from the purview of the blockade, the organisations said in a press release.
Kangpokpi deputy commissioner Lalithambigai Kalidash will take over charge of Senapati. Chief secretary J. Suresh Babu issued an order to this effect on Monday night.
Case hearing: The Manipur Information Commission resumed the hearing of its appeal and complaint cases through audio and video conference from Tuesday. The commission conducted the hearing of two cases relating to the social welfare department through video-calling on WhatsApp. The commission has taken the step to ensure the Right to Information to citizens of Manipur even during the coronavirus pandemic.
