After proving her mettle in national competitions, Jamshedpur’s talented climber Anisha Verma is all set to represent the country in an international competition in Italy.

Anisha, who turned 15 on Friday, will display her skills at the Youth World Sport Climbing Championship to be held in Arco, Italy, from August 22 to 31. The event is being patronised by International Federation of Sport Climbing.

Anisha’s mentor Bibhas Roy said plans were afoot to send Anisha to Austria for proper training in the run-up to the climbing meet. “We plan to send Anisha abroad for adequate exposure and training,” he added.

Calcutta-based Roy, who trains sport climbers at a cradle run by Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) at JRD Tata Sports Complex, said Anisha would definitely win a slot in the Indian team as she was among country’s best climbers in the Under-14 category.

“Anisha has improved a lot. She’s a keen learner who seldom skips her training. I have great faith in her abilities as a climber,” the mentor said, adding Anisha would compete in speed, lead and bouldering categories of sport climbing.

TSAF has also taken care of Anisha’s accommodation at the sports hostel of JRD Tata Sports Complex.

The teen climber claimed gold medals in speed and bouldering at the All India Open (Bouldering and Speed) Sport Climbing competition in New Delhi last month, besides making podium finishes in zonal and state events .

“I think I am in good form. I love climbing and will try my best to win medal for my country,” she added.

TSAF, which boasts the lone sport climbing facility in Jharkhand, runs a dedicated training centre that has experienced mentors, including Roy.

The premier adventure outfit is promoting Anisha and her sibling Aman to the hilt. Aman has represented the country in the Asian Kids Sport Climbing Championship held in Singapore in 2017.
